QUBIC (Quantum Utilisation for Breakthroughs in Ireland's Computing) is a three‑year industrial research project turning advances in quantum computing into practical solutions for three of Ireland's most strategically important sectors: energy, advanced materials and pharmaceuticals.
Co‑ordinated by Equal1 and funded by Enterprise Ireland's Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund with a grant of €13.7 million, QUBIC is a targeted industrial research programme built around the real problems Irish industry faces today and the quantum capabilities that will shape competitive advantage tomorrow, turning quantum advances into concrete solutions for Irish companies.
The question facing most organisations is not whether quantum computing will eventually be relevant to their sector, but when - and how to be ready. QUBIC exists to answer both.
The project's ambition is to establish Ireland as a recognised hub for quantum-enabled innovation by delivering research that has a direct line to commercial application. To achieve this, QUBIC will:
Develop quantum-first algorithms that aim to offer advantages over classical methods in optimisation, simulation and machine learning.
Build scalable silicon spin-qubit hardware and control electronics targeted at supporting demanding industrial workloads.
Create a robust software stack that bridges quantum devices and real-world applications across energy, materials and pharma.
Deliver validated demonstrators and exploitation roadmaps that give Irish companies a practical route into quantum computing.
QUBIC operates through a structured set of work packages that link industrial challenges directly to core quantum technologies. Every algorithm developed is informed by a real industry problem. Every demonstrator is built on state‑of‑the‑art quantum hardware and software capabilities.
This creates a continuous feedback loop between sector needs and research outputs, helping to ensure that QUBIC’s results are not only scientific advances but solutions that global industry can apply.
Power and Energy Systems
Grid optimisation, renewable energy integration and demand forecasting, supporting Ireland's transition to a low-carbon economy.
